Capicity Building
NCDA offers support to voluntary groups to assist in their organisation's development and works to develop new projects to meet community needs.
In 2006/2007 this included:
- Confirmation of extension for European community capacity building funds to March 2008
- With small grants from the European Social Fund NCDA developed a further 5 small grants to build the capacity of local voluntary organizations
- Supported 3 local residents associations in the development of their constitutions and objectives: Valley Road Tenants Association; Hanson Road Tenants Association; Guinness Trust Tenants Association
- Submission of bids and approval of funding for Open Spaces work from the Heritage Lottery and Environment Agency
- Working with the WRVS on an intergenerational project funded by the Heritage Lottery and housing of WRVS worker within NCDA offices
- Housing of Newhaven Chamber of Commerce within NCDA offices
- Working with SDCVS on the delivery of a district-wide training programme for voluntary groups
- Provision of resource centre for member groups offering office services and equipment loans
- Support to the Chapel Arts Centre; West Beach group and Newhaven Football Club
- Successful funding bid to Newhaven Town Council for a Debt and Financial Management advice
- Feasibility study coordinated by NCDA for the establishment of an East Sussex Credit Union to give local access to saving and low cost borrowing facilities. County wide stakeholder meetings chaired by NCDA.
- Support to Lewes District CAB to provide additional debt and benefits sessions to meet local need
- Commenced development of the partnership to establish an advice hub based at Summerhayes for Newhaven
- Support to four multi-agency strategic groups to maintain and realise the strategies for Newhaven in Physical Activity, Food and Health, Young People and Older People
- Regular meetings of InPAct (Physical Activity Strategy) multi-agency group to increase physical activity among Newhaven residents through sports club development, promoting physical activity and the development of facilities
- Development of physical activity sessions with children and families, young people and to support mental well-being
- Identification and mapping of 15 healthy walks linked to the Open Spaces and calorie mapping to promote physical activity in collaboration with the University of Brighton, PCT and ESCC
- Training for staff and community members as Healthy Walks Leaders
- Support to the Meridian Forum (older people's forum)
- Working in partnership with Sussex Sports Partnership, Sussex Downs College, Active Lewes and Lewes District Council on the development of a Community Sports Network
- Identification of actions linked to the realization of the Food Strategy: maintenance of the at cost Fruit and Vegetable stall to enable local access to fresh and affordable food; development of funding and facilities to deliver cooking and healthy eating sessions at Summerhayes, Children and Family Centre and linked to youth activities; opening of Fruit and veg stall at Southdown Junior School
- Maintaining links with East Sussex Social Enterprise Network, the Development Trusts Association and development trusts in East Sussex
- Joint work with Newhaven Town Council and Newhaven Chamber of Commerce on a survey of businesses in relation to incinerator
- Recycling facilities secured in May 2006 on Denton Island for the Training and Business Centre and the Children and Family Centre and at Summerhayes
- Development of NCDA financial and budgeting systems
- Maintenance of NCDA staff handbook and internal compliance and personal development training for all staff
