Newhaven Children and Young Peoples Initiative (NCYPI)

NCYPI aims to: Youth Shelter at Fort Road
  • Consult with the young people of Newhaven and maintain their participation in assessment of need.
  • Deliver services and facilities to meet the expressed needs of all young people.
  • Support existing provision and increase provision for young people
  • Ensuring the updating and monitoring of the priorities of the Newhaven Youth Strategy.
  • Promote young people's issues and maintain the positive image of young people in the community.
  • Promote partnership and multi-agency working to meet the needs of young people in Newhaven.

In 2006/2007 the work with children and young people succeeded in:

  • Maintaining funding for and delivering regular Saturday informal football sessions at Tideway School and at Fort Road Recreation Ground involving 82 young people.
  • Coordinating the youth football teams division into two age groups & supported their participation in 5 District Tournaments - the older age group reached the Semi Finals & won the Fair Play awards in two tournaments.
  • Coordinating a Youth Sports Afternoon and Dance sessions as part of the Maritime festival in May 2006
  • Organising an Arts workshop day in June 2006 as part of the Maritime festival
  • Supporting Newhaven Strategic Network Maritime Sculpture Design Competition for young people in April, May & June and helped coordinate young people's event at the unveiling of the winning design July 2006
  • Supported young people in the selection of the design and site for a Youth shelter at Fort Road and coordinated the construction.
  • Organised with young people the formal youth shelter opening event in July 2006 for young people of the youth shelter involving young people and the Newhaven Mayor cutting the ribbon, with music and sports activities
  • Securing funding from a range of sources to deliver weekly Lewes Road Youth Club Sessions which ran for 40 weeks with 400 attendances of young people aged 9 to 18
  • Secured funding to open second regular youth club night from January 2007
  • Supporting the residents and parents of Ashington Residents Association to achieve funding to support diversionary summer & weekly term time out of school activities for the young people.
  • Delivering activities for 96 children aged 5 to 8 and young people aged 9 to 14 at Ashington Gardens
  • Working with 7 young women to establish a girls' group
  • Working on the annual revision of the youth strategy in consultation with young people
  • Maintaining quarterly meetings of the partnership group to deliver the Youth Strategy
  • Working in partnership with ESCC Youth Development Service in delivering detached youth work and diversionary activities for specific young people
  • Working in partnership with Sussex Police, Lewes District Council, Tideway School and YDS in the development of diversionary activities and the need for a dedicated youth centre for Newhaven
  • Developing community involvement and use of Denton Island Centre as a base for 14 to 16 skills training
  • Achieving funding to commence two twilight youth information and advice sessions
  • Planning joint working with Lewes YMCA for the delivery of holiday activities

Newhaven Youth Strategy steering group:


The NCDA Youth worker coordinates quarterly partnership meetings to monitor the implementation of the Youth Strategy including:
Lewes District Foyer, Connexions, PCT, Sussex Police, Rainer Housing, Millennium Volunteers, YDS, YOT, ESCC Children's Services, Newhaven Town Council, Lewes District Council, East Sussex Parenting Partnership and Tideway School.
